  • In the days before 9/11, these makeshift memorial shrines started to appear all over the city. Every lamp post, almost every traffic light in the city had the Stars and Stripes attached to it together with flowers and cards full of messages mourning lost ones.

  • The pride Americans have in their flag and country is enormous. That was something that struck me from the beginning of my trip. All around Ground Zero these huge flags hung from the surrounding buildings as a message to the ground crews to not give up, your country needs you.

  • In the days after the 9/11 memorial I talked to this metal worker at Ground Zero. The aftermath stories this man told were horrific. And then... I noticed the sticker on his hard hat. It read 'If you really love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, hunt it down and kill it'. That basically summed up the emotions some New Yorkers went through during those days.

  • I was standing in the crowd on the intersection of Church Street and Liberty Street on the most Southern Corner of Ground Zero. When the memorial service started and all the names of the casualties got mentioned, the crowd around me just went silent. The whole city went silent. This man was mourning and praying for lost loved ones. This was the only shot I took.

  • Since the crowd was blocking Liberty Street, this bus driver got locked in. I saw him climbing on top of his bus to follow the memorial service.

  • 'United We Stand' and 'We Will Never Forget' were the universal messages you saw everywhere you went in NYC.<br />
I can not begin to express what I felt in those 10 days. But even now, when I try to write this, I still get a knot in my stomach.
